Empowering the Next Generation

Introducing Youth to the Electrical Trade
The skilled trades form the backbone of our communities, yet many young people remain unaware of the rewarding career opportunities they offer. Among these, the electrical trade stands out as a dynamic, well-paying profession with room for growth and innovation. However, for many high school students, the path to becoming an electrician is often overlooked.
That’s where Teresa comes in. As an instructor at the Electrical Joint Training Committee (EJTC), Teresa has made it her mission to bridge the gap in awareness by inspiring and educating the next generation about the opportunities available in the electrical trade.

A Personal Mission to Educate
Teresa’s journey began with a personal reflection on her own career path. “When I was in high school, I don’t remember anyone talking about the trades,” she says. “I didn’t even know what the trades were. Now, after an incredible 25-year career as an electrician, I want to share my passion and experiences with youth who might not otherwise have the chance to learn about this field.”
Over the years, Teresa has traveled extensively across Vancouver, the Tri-Cities, and the Fraser Valley, conducting FREE hands-on workshops and informational sessions for middle and high school students and youth centers. Her presentations are more than just lectures; they’re opportunities to spark curiosity, answer questions, and break down misconceptions about the trades.
Breaking Down Barriers
For many students, choosing a career in the trades comes with challenges, from societal stereotypes to a lack of information. Teresa is committed to removing these barriers.
“I’ve found that multiple factors can discourage young people from considering the trades,” she explains. “Improving career counselor outreach, increasing the visibility of trade programs, and strengthening connections between schools and trade employers are key steps we can take to open doors for students.”
By collaborating with schools and youth centers, Teresa aims to ensure that no student is left in the dark about the incredible potential of a career in the trades.

Why Should Youths Consider the Electrical Trade?
- High Demand for Skilled Workers
Electricians are essential to modern life, whether it’s wiring homes, maintaining commercial buildings, or supporting infrastructure projects. The growing need for skilled tradespeople ensures job security and a bright future for those entering the field. - Competitive Pay and Benefits
Electricians enjoy competitive wages from the outset, with opportunities for increased earnings as they gain experience and certifications. Many positions also offer benefits like pensions and health insurance, making it a financially secure career choice.
- Hands-On Learning and Growth
For students who thrive on practical challenges, the electrical trade is an ideal fit. Apprenticeships allow young professionals to earn while they learn, combining theoretical knowledge with real-world application.
Lighting the Way Forward
At the EJTC, we believe every student should have the opportunity to explore a future in the skilled trades. Whether through apprenticeships or training programs, the electrical trade offers a fulfilling, stable career with room to grow.
