Carissa’s Career Change to Skilled Trades: From Kitchens to Electrical

When Carissa looks back on her career path, she sees two very different chapters. For more than a decade, she worked in the food industry, from dishwasher to chef, across restaurants and food trucks. But when the pandemic hit, the industry ground to a halt. That pause gave her the chance to reflect: Was she truly happy with where she was heading?
The answer was no.
“I realized I wasn’t very happy. I wasn’t earning a livable wage, and I had already lost my passion for cooking.”
Encouraged by her partner, she connected with ACCESS (Aboriginal Community Career Employment Services), an Indigenous program that supports career training. At first, she debated between welding and electrical but ultimately chose electrical for its technical side and strong opportunities. “I figured I’d give it a try.” That decision changed everything.
Starting Fresh: A Career Change to Skilled Trades
Transitioning into the trades wasn’t simple. Carissa admits she started out “very green,” with no construction background. Even simple tools were new to her.
“I didn’t even know how to use a measuring tape properly at first.”
Despite the steep learning curve, she embraced it. Through ACCESS’s Skilled Trades program and then the EJTC (Electrical Joint Training Committee), she found the hands-on, supportive training she needed to succeed.
“The instructors at the EJTC have been amazing. They’re very hands-on, which works for me because I ask a lot of questions. They never made me feel like I couldn’t learn this.”
Finding Her Place
Now in the final stage of her apprenticeship, Carissa is thriving. On the job site, she’s carved out a niche in fire alarm systems, a specialty she loves for its technical problem-solving.
“I like work that makes me think. Fire alarm requires a lot of detail and focus, and I really enjoy that.”
She’s become such a trusted part of the team that colleagues often come to her with questions. “It feels good to know people rely on me, that I’ve grown into someone others can look to for answers.”
A Life-Changing Decision
For Carissa, her career change to skilled trades has been nothing short of transformational.
In just four years, she has doubled her income compared to over a decade working in kitchens. She has benefits, savings, and the ability to plan for the future. And most importantly, she feels fulfilled and proud of her work. Her experience shows why electrical apprenticeships are such a valuable career path: you learn hands-on, earn while you train, and build a future in a trade that’s always in demand.
“I never thought I could have savings for a house. Now I do. I can spoil my little dog. I’m not living paycheck to paycheck anymore.”
Advice for Future Apprentices
Carissa now shares her story with high school students, encouraging them to explore the trades. Her biggest message? Don’t box yourself in.
“You don’t have to stick to one path forever. Life is long, and we have the privilege to change careers. The trades are full of opportunities, grants, and supports to help you succeed. Explore your options.”
Looking Ahead
As Carissa prepares to step into her final year of apprenticeship, she feels both excited and proud. What started as an uncertain leap during a global pandemic has turned into a rewarding, sustainable career.
Her journey is a reminder that it’s never too late to make a change, and that the trades can open doors you never thought possible.
