Allyship in the Skilled Trades

As most know, the skilled trade sector is growing, evolving, and improving as we move toward a more diverse and inclusive workforce. Being understanding, encouraging, and kind throughout these times is crucial for retention and a positive workplace culture.
Being an ally in the skilled trade sector involves actively supporting and advocating for underrepresented groups, such as women, indigenous, and individuals from marginalized communities.
Here are five simple steps you can take to be an ally in the ever-growing skilled trade sector:
1. Educate yourself
Start by educating yourself about the challenges and barriers underrepresented groups face in the skilled trade sector. Understand the systemic issues and biases and learn about the experiences and perspectives of those often marginalized.
2. Listen and Learn
Engage in conversations with individuals from underrepresented groups in the skilled trade sector. Listen to their experiences, challenges, and ideas. Be open to learning from their perspective and seek to understand their needs and concerns.
3. Be an Active Bystander
If you witness discrimination, harassment, or bias in the skilled trade sector, be an active bystander. Intervene safely and support the targeted individual. Report any incidents to the appropriate authorities or supervisors to ensure accountability.
4. Support and Mentor
Offer support and mentorship to individuals from underrepresented groups pursuing careers in the skilled trades. Share your knowledge, skills, and experience to help them succeed. Provide guidance, networking opportunities, and resources to help them navigate their career paths.
5. Continuously Learn and Improve
Allyship is an ongoing process of learning and growth. Stay informed about the latest issues and developments related to diversity and inclusion. Reflect on your biases and privileges and be open to feedback and constructive criticism. Commit to continuously improving your allyship efforts.
Being an effective ally requires consistent action, empathy, and a genuine commitment to creating an inclusive, safe, and equitable skilled trade sector for all to enjoy and prosper!
