5 Simple Ways to Promote Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

The skilled trade sector is facing mass shortages of skilled trade workers due to the demographic shift occurring over recent years and the need for more individuals pursuing trade careers. According to Buildforce Canada, the industry must recruit 309,000 workers over the next decade (2021 – 2030) to replace the expected retirement of 259,100 workers, approximately 22% of the workforce.

Promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) within a construction company, organization, or jobsite is essential for fostering a positive, inclusive, and safe work environment. By embracing diversity and inclusion, the industry can tap into a wider talent pool, including individuals from underrepresented groups such as women, Indigenous and non-binary people. This helps to address the skills gap and ensure a sustainable workforce for the future of this sector. Promoting and ensuring DEI in the workforce does not have to be a challenge.

Here are five simple ways your company, organization, or jobsite can promote DEI in the workplace.

1. Foster Inclusive Restrooms and Facilities

Provide gender-neutral restrooms and changing facilities alongside male and female options. Ensure that these facilities are clearly labeled and easily accessible to accommodate the needs, preferences, and safety of non-binary employees.

2. Use Gender-Neutral Language

Encourage the use of gender-neutral language in all communications, both written and verbal. Avoid assuming an individual’s gender identity and use inclusive terms encompassing all genders.

3. Celebrate Diversity and Achievements

Regularly acknowledge and celebrate the contributions and achievements of individuals from all genders and backgrounds. Highlight success stories, organize-themed events, and create opportunities for employees to share their unique experiences and perspectives.

4. Encourage Mentorship and Sponsorship Programs

Implement mentorship and sponsorship programs and opportunities that actively support the career development of individuals from underrepresented backgrounds and genders. Encourage senior employees to serve as mentors or sponsors, offering guidance, support, and opportunities for growth, development, and advancement.

5. Lead by Example

Encourage company leadership to demonstrate inclusivity by respecting and embracing underrepresented individuals. Encourage managers and supervisors to promote a culture of respect, address any instances of discrimination or bias and support underrepresented groups in their career growth.

Promoting diversity and inclusion within the trade sector leads to a more resilient, innovative, and inclusive workforce. By creating a safer workplace and leveraging the strengths of a diverse workforce, the industry can thrive, adapt to changing demographics and market demands, and create positive impacts for workers, employers, and society.
